I remember standing at Dickie’s Barbecue at Dallas Love Field Airport early one morning. Before I order my two breakfast tacos I turn and motion for the next person in line to come up proclaiming it is a “pay it forward” moment. As I am motioning I see an airline Captain and he looks startled.

“No thank you” was his reply, do it for someone that needs it more than I do.

It was obvious he did not understand my rules.

Sir, there are rules and here they are. I quickly explain the simple rules.

I reinforced the “randomness” as one of the important keys to making it work. He thanked me and went on his way.

The only decision you need to make is when am I going to try.

You will meet some awesome people and have some wonderful stories. Stating a fact, I have never paid it forward and had a bad result.

I encourage you to do it. It could be as simple as sharing a smile, or acknowledging the janitor, or a small joke with the cashier, it could be the highlight of their day.

In 2000 Mel Gipson played in a movie called “What Women Want” and he could hear what females were thinking. He is in his office and hears the thoughts of a young lady will no self confidence. It is a great reminder we are around people everyday struggling.

Your smile my be the biggest gift they get today.
